Taking real money on a private server: card, PayPal, and crypto

What Stripe, PayPal and a crypto gateway each mean for chargebacks, account freezes and who actually holds the money

The payment method you pick decides two things people rarely think about up front: who holds your players' money, and what happens when a player disputes a charge. The three realistic options differ sharply on both.

Card payments through Stripe

Stripe provides card payments and payouts to your bank. The main risk for virtual goods is disputes. Purchases made without the cardholder's permission can be charged back, with a dispute fee added to the refund. Keep delivery records so you can respond with transaction evidence.

Fees vary by country and card type. Check Stripe's current pricing for your account before choosing a payment method.

PayPal

PayPal is familiar to many players and quick to set up. Account limitations and payment holds are possible, so review PayPal's current acceptable-use and reserve policies before enabling it.

Crypto through a gateway

A gateway like NOWPayments converts a coin payment and settles to you. Two real advantages: no card chargebacks, and it works for players who prefer crypto. Adoption is lower than card or PayPal, so it usually works best as an additional payment method.

Who holds the money

Whatever you pick, insist on this: the money lands in an account you own. A panel or middleman that receives player payments "for you" and pays you out later is a counterparty risk you do not need. You are relying on their solvency, account policies, and payout schedule. This is how Forgeport is built, as a matter of policy: payments go through your own connected Stripe account or your own NOWPayments keys, you are the merchant of record, and the platform takes 0% of sales. Its revenue comes from the flat fee. The donation store overview describes that money flow end to end. Apply the same standard when comparing any panel: see what a donation panel actually costs for how the fee models compare once volume grows.
